Beauty in the Ordinary

This is not about being brilliant, or extraordinary, it's not about wanting to be famous, or making headlines, or trying to impress...this about sharing a 'gift' each day with the world...to lift the spirit of people when they read this blog, to show them the beauty in the ordinary.
"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it." Raold Dahl

Lucky Me...

'february 6, 1979 was a cold snowy night.  I had just tucked my almost-two-year old into her bed; my mother was quietly knitting baby clothes in front of the TV and hubby had taken himself off to play his regular Tuesday-night ice-hockey game.  Subtle twinges in my back, but it was still two weeks before the due-date, so surely no worries.  The evening crept on with quiet routines and soft, night-time darkness taking over the house.  As the snow storm grew in intensity outside, so grew the storm inside my body.  Twinges became grasps and I knew our second child was ready to make her way into this life.  Phone calls to the ice-rink - better get home soon honey and phone calls to the doctor - we are on our way.  A slow and careful drive through sometimes blinding snow, but we arrive safely and by ten o'clock the next day without too much fuss or bother - there she was.  I remember thinking as the last stages of labour came and went, please, please, please, let this one be a girl too.  I hadn't cared the first time, boy or girl, but I so much wanted our eldest daughter to know the joy of growing up with a sister, just as I had.  And in God's infinite wisdom, it was granted.  So much sweetness over the past 34 years with both of our girls.  Happy Birthday Baby Girl, love mumma."JP

  1. Happy Birthday to your lovely daughter, J. The journey to the hospital must have been a nightmare with all that snow to contend with. Lovely pictures of both your girls.

    1. Speaking of Hollywood John...that photo was taken at my niece's wedding. Jessica was in the wedding party so she and Nelson had arrived separately. I asked Nelson if he had driven or taken the subway to the church. He looked at me sideways, straightening his bow tie remarked "Subway? James Bond doesn't ride the subway."

      Good-looking couple aren't they.

  5. Happy birthday to your daughter. My daughter was born a few weeks before yours. We drove to the hospital during an ce storm. We were young and did not worry too much about the weather conditions. Today when a few flakes of snow come down, we panic.

  8. Jacqueline, my eldest son Matt was born February 4th, 1976. I too remember the snow storm that night, driving in to St. Catharines from Jordan at around 10pm. on a Sunday evening. Your daughter is lovely, beautiful....yes, we are so lucky! N.xo
