Beauty in the Ordinary

This is not about being brilliant, or extraordinary, it's not about wanting to be famous, or making headlines, or trying to impress...this about sharing a 'gift' each day with the world...to lift the spirit of people when they read this blog, to show them the beauty in the ordinary.
"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it." Raold Dahl

Two Ps in a pod

"...something has been on my mind just lately",
I try to casually mention as I walk into our living room.

It is night and warm, night-blooming jasmine-scented air fills the house. Through wide-open lanai doors, I can see the stars sparkling on the lake.

"hmm?" he replies, as he looks up away from the television.  He sees the concern
on my face and as he presses the 'off' button he softly taps the empty space on the
couch beside him.

"Hmmm?" comes more insistently now.

Small wrinkles crease between his eyebrows as he leans in and puts his arm around my white-bath-robed shoulder.

"Just what is on your mind lately?'"

"..it's this aging business", I meekly confess, feeling vain and shallow.
"where did the years, no decades! go?
Just lately, each time I pass a mirror, or step from my shower, memory dances me back to that girl who ran away from England to follow you.
She's gone and I can't find even a trace of her anymore."

The worry-lines between his brows soften as I see the shadow of a complicit smile
begin to form around his icy-blue eyes.
This smile grows as he tips his head to one side and turns my body
fully square to his.
With each of his large, rough hands smothering my bare shoulders
he whispers..."we are two peas in a pod, two Ps playing in our pod".

And as he kisses me softly on the forehead, I find a way to shoo this worry away, at least for now.

  1. A timely post since I just turned 50!

We do fret about aging don't we. I am always scrutinizing the little things...

  2. We all have those feelings. With each decade comes more contemplation. The older I get though, the more I become "me". It has been a freeing experience and although I wish I had back some of the good aspects of youth, I am happy with what age has given me. Enjoy the ride, it's bouncy, but exhilarating.

  5. You have such a keeper there Jacqueline....so sweet. Ageing will be much more bearable with someone so loving and caring by your side and who will always see the beauty in you no matter what.

  7. O'h Jaquie, those little lines you see are your journey in life, your laughter shows, your sorrow shows but most of all your eyes always show the wonderous joy,so no matter what you will always be beautiful to those who love you,and I just love the age of 60 and over it is fabulous the only worry is that the use by date is getting sloser lol ,you seem to have a lovely pea next to you in your little pod.xx

  8. What a heartfelt post. I recently decided to truly let go of this "culture of youth" by not coloring my hair and letting the grey fly! And let me tell you it is. I am embracing my age, my issues, and my life.
