Beauty in the Ordinary

This is not about being brilliant, or extraordinary, it's not about wanting to be famous, or making headlines, or trying to impress...this about sharing a 'gift' each day with the world...to lift the spirit of people when they read this blog, to show them the beauty in the ordinary.
"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it." Raold Dahl

House-y Stuff

Today it was...

sump pump needed a check valve (so the water doesn't just circle round and round and round ad naseum)...

attack 4 on the carpenter ants that are eating away the fascia board at the front of the house...

and attack 1 on the carpenter bees that are making
holes like this

in the garden fence!

Now...we aren't killing the bees, just trying to send them away (to wreck havoc on someone else's fence?).

The ants, however are an entirely different matter.

The joys of living with nature!

  1. We have been fighting off ants for over a month now, both inside and out. There is quite a crop of them this year.

    1. The pest control people told me yesterday Sock'em, that they haven't had a day since the beginning of the year when they haven't had a call about carpenter ants. We've been fighting this crop since last September. Fortunately only outside.

  3. As much as I am terrified (phobic, to be exact)of bees ~ and your lovely photo gives me the heeby-geebies ~ I must say that I am very impressed with the precession with with they drill their holes!

    Good luck with your battles!

    1. Certainly didn't mean to frighten you Nancy! Those holes certainly are impressive. They lay their eggs(?) in them and then deposit a waxy plug to keep them safe until they hatch. Quite clever...just wished it didn't destroy my fence in the process...

  4. The problem is that you are such nice people these critters want to stay once they have come to visit you. If you weren't so nice. . . . But then, you wouldn't have such fine blog.

  5. Our Carpenter Bees are Jet Black with a blueish sheen, and make the same type of holes; usually in old fruit trees. I rather like them, they're big, decorative, and (I think) harmless. Now, those ants are a different matter....

    1. I quite like them too Cro...big black shiny bottoms! Unfortunately, our neighbour is allergic to bee venom, and while these bees are quite docile, don't think we can run the risk of having her stung.
It's astonishing how destructive the ants are...all out warfare now!

  6. Hello Jacqueline

Talk about things happening in threes. You seem to have had your share of bugs and bugging matters this week.
Hope it gets resolved without too much expense.

    1. Fortunately Helen we live in a condominium corporation, so costs for these type of things are borne by the community. Treating for carpenter ants is exhorbitant!
