Beauty in the Ordinary

This is not about being brilliant, or extraordinary, it's not about wanting to be famous, or making headlines, or trying to impress...this about sharing a 'gift' each day with the world...to lift the spirit of people when they read this blog, to show them the beauty in the ordinary.
"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it." Raold Dahl

The Power of Stories

Last night I attended my kids baseball game...yes, my children and their spouses, the late 20 somethings and early 30 somethings are on a baseball team. They call themselves
the 'Scared Hitless' team! Hilarious!
They played two games last night and won both, which was a delight to see.
My two grandsons, Jack 7, and Christian 3, came along to watch and play around while the game was on. It was wonderful because I got time to spend time with them both, watching them bounce off the sides of the teams dug out cage, watch extra baseball mitts fly randomly out onto the field...you know, the things boys get up to when Mum and Dad are busy.
The baseball park is set into the side of a gentle slopping hill and gives a panoramic view of the city that surrounds it. It holds soccer fields, tennis courts and number of baseball diamonds. There is also a children's playground located not far, which the boys and I and two other children spent quite a bit of time at during the two games.
The second game started around 7:30pm, Christian was beginning to get a little tired, so while the other three still ran around, Christian and I sat at the bottom of one of the slides and cuddled.
I asked him if he would like me to tell him a story and his little eyes lit up. " Which one would you like?" I asked "The Three Bears, Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty?" all the while racking my brain to think of all the children's stories I knew. "No" he replied " I want the one about the Crocodile Hunter".
Crocodile Hunter! Yikes! I didn't know that one. My mind quickly scanned his bedroom for this book, nothing came.
"Christian, did you get this book at the library with Mumma? I asked.
"No" he replied.
Ok, what to do?
Just begin, I thought, that's all there is to do.

Once upon a time there was this brave, young crocodile hunter. He lived in a country far away where.........
And so the story was born.
I was quite amazed at how the words flowed so easily from me. And when I found myself hesitating I just turned to Christian and asked..."And what do think the Crocodile Hunter had in his bag?"
"A dragon" replied Christian.
Who would have thought! I never would have thought of that! Brilliant!
I love children and there ability for imagination that has no limits, guidelines or restrictions.
Everything is possible.
It was a magical time spent last night between Christian, Myself, the Crocodile Hunter and the Dragon.
And I'm happy to say it all ended happily ever after.

The End.

  3. Tom...even when you say it, it sounds wonderful!

Yes, oh the deliciousness of it...to be called Honey by your grandson.

What's funny is that Paul's mothers name is Candy.
One day when Christian was over at my house, Paul and his Mum dropped by.
Christian was in awe, he had Honey and Candy all to himself!

  4. When we first moved to Tokyo the girls were 13 & 11. Our little family had two choices, focus inward and become each others best friend...or implode. Thankfully we chose the former, and the residue is that today we are still the best of friends. One practice the girls and I had while Rudy was working long and late to take care of all of us was to tell the 'continuing' story.
It would begin...Once upon a time there was this...
and the next part would pass to the next person who would continue the thought, or phrase, or sentence, or paragraph...and so it continued. And, guess what V., it always ended happily ever after. And because of that here we are...happily ever after!
