My little town is all a-buzz this weekend.
There are a whole bunch of would-be soldiers from the USA
camped out at Fort George.
People in period costume are hanging around town.
They've brought their horses,
their tents,
their lanterns
and flags.
It's all about The Capture of Ft. George
And I'm told there's going to be a battle, today at 3 o'clock.
I have to say, I understand having a party,
getting dressed up,
the fun of being together.
But I don't get re-enacting an event when a lot of people died.
Isn't there enough war is this world without reliving all the old ones?
I was going to say it's a man thing, but I see women are involved too. I am with you, why on earth would you want to reanact it. But, I guess history can be facinating and they are going back to a time when a battle was man versus man, one on one.

We have these reanactments at the American Museum in Bath. A few years ago it got a bit real when someone was shot dead because a brass tip from a ram-rod broke off inside the barrel of a musket.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant Husband tells me I misinterpret, that all of this is respect for those who fought and died in the form of theatre. I hope he's correct and it's not a benign form of encouraging blood-lust.

Great photo's J., agree about the war thing...but I think it's got to be more about drawing tourist's so to spend money in your little town, than anything else!
